How to create a backup in WhatsApp step by step

WhatsApp allows you to create a backup or backup copy of messages that can be stored in the internal memory of the phone or in the cloud, the steps to create a backup of WhatsApp are the same for all smartphone models.

If the idea is to save a copy locally (that is, without using the cloud), the phone must be equipped with a micro SD.

Create Local Backup

If we decide to save the message through this process, a copy of the WhatsApp conversation will be stored on the external memory card.

Later, when we want to restore the conversation, all we have to do is insert the same memory card in the new phone and then restore the backup.

To do this you have to do the following:

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap on the three dots to show the options and enter "Settings".
  3. Enter "Chats".
  4. Go to "Backup".
  5. Within Google Drive Settings, tap on "Save to Google Drive" and select "Never".
  6. Now tap on the green "Save" button to create and save your backup on the phone.

If you really want to guarantee a backup, it is better to save your WhatsApp conversations on Google Drive.

In this way, a copy can be obtained in the cloud, which can be accessed from any device (as long as there is access data to the Google account used for this purpose).

Create backup in Google Drive

To save a backup on Google Drive, you must have an active Google account on your phone, and a good internet connection. Then you just have to do the following:

  1. Open the WhatsApp application.
  2. Enter the options menu by tapping on the three dots and enter "Settings".
  3. Enter the "Chats" options.
  4. Inside, tap on "Backup".
  5. Tap on "Save to Google Drive" and you will be able to select a period to make a backup automatically or manually when you just tap on "Save".
  6. If you have more than one Google account, you can select the one you want to use to save the WhatsApp backup.
  7. Finally, if you want to make the copy right now, tap on the green "Save" button to generate the new backup that will be saved in the cloud (Google Drive account).

In the backup we can also choose if we want the videos that we send or receive to be included, for that we must leave the "Include videos" option active.

Restore WhatsApp Backup on Android

When we change phones and we want to have the WhatsApp already normalized again, what we have to do is restore the copy of WhatsApp on Android, for this procedure we must use the same phone number with which we made the backup.

To start restoring and recovering WhatsApp conversations, you must first install the WhatsApp application for Android.

After launching the application, follow the steps below to download WhatsApp backup to Google Drive as follows:

  1. Enter your cell phone number and verify it by sms.
  2. A message will appear with the option to restore the backup, where you can see the "Backup found" message with the creation date, file size, associated Google account, etc. Tap "Restore" to recover all conversations ( if you don't do it now, then you won't be able to restore it until you uninstall and reinstall the application ).
  3. When the restoration process is finished, it will show the number of restored messages and by touching "Next" you will finish the installation of WhatsApp with all the recovered messages.
