If you are one of those people who think whether  or not it is worth having an antivirus installed on your Android phone , we offer you a special alternative to find out if an application has a virus before it is downloaded, we are going to use a totally free online tool called VirusTotal.

VirusTotal is not an antivirus, it only uses the database of more than 50 antivirus to scan and detect a virus or malware in any type of file, and we can use it in two ways.

Detect viruses in an application with VirusTotal

With VirusTotal we can analyze any type of file that is on our Android phone, for that we must do the following:

  1. First, enter your cell phone's web browser and type the following address VirusTotal.com.
  2. Tap on Choose File and choose the file or APK you want to scan for viruses or malware.
  3. Next, tap on the same button but now it will say Confirm Upload.
  4. Finally the screen will change showing the scan result.
  5. If the uploaded file indicates everything in a green circle, it means that it is completely clean , however, when you see even a red circle, it will indicate that the file contains a virus or malware.

It is important to note that the VirusTotal online tool will not clean or delete the infected file , this must be done by the user through the use of an antivirus or by deleting the infected file.

How to know if an application has a virus before downloading it

VirusTotal presents a function to analyze any URL or file link before downloading it to our Android phone, to do so you must perform the following steps:

  1. Enter the VirusTotal.com site from your mobile phone's browser  and on the screen, tap on the URL tab.
  2. Copy the download link  obtained from the page where the application or file you want is published. Make sure to skip the ad shortener to get to the actual url.
  3. Paste it in the VirusTotal bar and tap on the magnifying glass to start the virus or malware scan.
  4. In the results screen, you will be able to see if the link is infected with viruses or malware .

Remember that if you are going to download an application outside of the official store (APK) or simply use an alternative store to the Google Play Store , it is always important to have an antivirus on your android phone.
